Overview of Hair Transplantation

Hair transplantation is a safe and simple cosmetic procedure that involves moving healthy hair follicles from one part of the scalp to areas that are either bald, or balding (grafting). Most commonly, this procedure is used to treat male pattern baldness as well as female pattern baldness (both referred to as Alopecia). Hair transplantation can also be used to restore eyelashes, eyebrows, facial hair, and to fill in scars from surgery or previous hair transplants.

Hair transplants can be performed in two ways; the hair follicles can either be extracted individually, or a section of skin can be removed from the scalp and the hair follicles later extracted from that.

Depending on the patient and his/her needs, the cosmetic surgeon will review and access the case to decide which of the two hair replacement treatment options is best.

Reasons for Hair Transplantation

There are many reasons patients seek hair transplantation. Men and women lose hair for a number of reasons at different ages. The most common causes of hair loss in men and women are genetic factors and hormonal changes, commonly due to aging. Hair loss is usually seen in the form of a receding hairline and thinning of hair at the crown, or very top of the scalp.

Hair loss in women, on the other hand, is most likely to be seen over the entire head as opposed to specific areas, with the most common cause of female hair loss being hormonal changes. Hair transplant surgeons have two hair transplantation options for patients suffering from hair loss.

Hair Transplant Options

There are two different methods for hair transplantation: Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). The two procedures are similar with one major difference, the way the follicles are extracted.

In Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), the follicular units are extracted directly from the scalp, whereas in Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), a strip of the scalp is removed and the follicles are extracted from that.

The hair transplantation option that will be most suitable for individual patients suffering from hair loss can be determined by a number of hair-loss tests proctored by the cosmetic surgeon.
