Female Pattern Baldness

Hair transplant surgery is an option for women who are noticing significant hair loss referred to as female pattern baldness. Although there is no specific age range for hair loss in women, the cause is often linked to aging and hormonal imbalance.

Causes of Female Pattern Baldness

Female Pattern Baldness is caused by the decrease of estrogen and the increase of testosterone, which has an effect on the hair follicles similar to that of DHT, causing the hair to become thinner and the follicle to eventually stop producing hair. Although female hair loss can begin in the teenage years, it is usually seen in women who are pre-menopausal, going through menopause, or during pregnancy, when estrogen levels in females show a marked decrease.

How Female Pattern Baldness is Measured

The Ludwig Scale is not as widely used as The Norwood Scale for Male Pattern Baldness but, this scale is still very important for women to check and determine their Female Pattern Baldness condition. The Ludwig Scale is divided mainly into 4 stages, stage 4 being the most advanced. Using this scale, women can check to see where they fit on the hair loss scale.
