Hair Loss In Women

Dealing with hair loss may be extremely difficult, especially for women. However, understanding the common causes of hair loss and levels of thinning and baldness, might help women understand the options for treatment available.

What causes hair loss?

Hair loss is a very natural part of a womens hair renewal process. When hair falls out, new growth replaces it. However, this process can be slowed down by a number of hormonal changes.  Hormonal changes may cause rapid hair loss and as these changes fluctuate, hair loss may increase. Since men and women's bodies work differently, the most common cause for hair loss in women is not genetic like it is for a man. The most common cause is hormonal and linked to the menstrual cycle. Changes in hormone levels during menopause, pregnancy and thyroid conditions can cause temporary or even permanent hair loss.

When hormones such as estrogen and testosterone are produced more rapidly due to changes in a females body, these fluctuating hormones may cause hair loss. An example, of this may be when a woman gives birth to a baby, her hormones can enter a resting phase, while her body returns to its pre-baby state. During this period, commonly three to six months after delivery, women may notice an increase in hair loss. Fortunately, the hair loss is temporary and tends to subside in about twelve months.

Female-Pattern Hair Loss

As a women ages, her hair tends to thin out. A woman's pattern of hair loss is similar to a mans and the ages they begin to see hair loss is the same. The only difference is a women tends to have overall thinning, as opposed to a mans hair loss in which the hairline begins to recede and/or balding is seen at the crown of the scalp. Women tend to lose hair on the crown and at their hairline. This is referred to as female pattern-baldness.

When should you consider hair transplant surgery?

Although hair loss may be temporary for some, a condition called Alopecia Areata is more serious. This disease is defined as patchy hair loss. If a women is experiencing this, it is recommended that she seek medical advice. Hair loss is mostly hereditary and effects about 50% of women. As long as it is not sudden, severe, patchy, or caused by emotional or physical stress it can be considered normal as a female matures.
