Male Pattern Baldness
Hair transplant surgery is an option for men who are noticing significant hair loss referred to as male pattern baldness. Although there is no specific age range for hair loss in men, the cause is often linked to genetics.
Causes of Male Pattern Baldness
Male Pattern Baldness, or male Alopecia, can begin as early as in your 20’s and 30’s. Hair loss in men has has been linked to a class of hormones called androgen's, specifically DHT (Dihydrotestosterone). When hair follicles at the top, front and crown of the scalp are exposed to DHT, the follicles shrink and change shape, which causes them to produce progressively thinner strands of hair with each cycle. This continues until the follicle can no longer produce a strand of hair.
How Male Pattern Baldness defined
The scale used to assess how advanced a man’s hair loss is defined by The Norwood Scale, ranging from levels 1 to 7, where the higher the score, the more advanced the hair loss. The pattern and rate at which men lose their hair can vary greatly, with some that lose hair rapidly in their 20’s up to a level 3 or level 4 and stay that way the rest of their lives, and others that have no detectable hair loss until their 50’s or 60’s and rapidly advance to a level 6 or level 7 in a short time. Typically, if there is thinning hair early in life, there is a very good chance of progressive hair loss later in life.
One very important indicator that men can look at to help determine how advanced their hair loss will be in family history. The idea that the balding gene comes from the mother’s side is a myth, and both sides of the family should be looked at, specifically, the older males.
