Hair Restoration Method comparison: FUT vs FUE
It is important that you understand the differences between the two available methods for hair transplant surgery – Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Depending on your particular situation, one or the other might be best for you. Below we will compare the two methods and let you decide... Remember that if you cannot decide on which method is most suitable for you, we encourage you to request an online or over-the-phone consultation with one of our hair transplant surgeons. If you choose this route, be sure to send us some photographs of your hair so that we can have a better idea of what it is you need. There are many factors to be taken into consideration, such as hair density, number of grafts, type of graft and scarring. Please examine fully what both methods entail.
FUT | FUE |
Leaves a thin lateral scar across the back of the head that can be hidden by hair | Leaves no scar |
Uses staples | no stitches or staples |
No need to shave before operation, the doctor will only trim your hair before the actual procedure | Hair must be shaved |
Follicular units are dissected and prepared under a microscope | Microscopic follicular units will be extracted from the donor area |
Hair shafts will not be damaged | 10 out of 100 hair shafts are damaged. |
The donor area will be numb for two weeks | No numbness |
Results can be achieved in only one session | Several sessions may be needed to achieve maximum results |
A maximum of 4000 grafts can be transplanted in one session | A maximum of 800 gratfs can be transplanted in one session. Because the process is so tedious and grafts are transplanted one by one, it is not possible to complete the surgery in one session. Patients may go back for 3 or 4 sessions. |

Hair follicles can only be removed and transplanted to areas on the head | Head hair and body hair can be used |
FUT is less expensive than FUE | FUE is more expensive than FUT |
