Causes of Hair Loss

Alopecia is a medical condition that describes the loss of hair from the head or body, eventually leading to baldness. In some cases alopecia is a symptom of a nutritional deficiency, such as iron deficiency anemia. When the body does not get enough vitamins and minerals, it cannot maintain healthy hair growth. Vegetarians who do not supplement the vitamins and nutrients found in meat are at risk for hair loss. Sufferers of eating disorders, such as bulimia or anorexia are also prone to hair loss.

Alopecia areata is a skin disease that causes small, round bald patches on the scalp at its first stages. This condition can get worse, causing the bald spots to get bigger and spread throughout the entire scalp, eventually leading to total hair loss.

Trichotillomania describes a psychological compulsion to repeatedly pull one’s hair out, or the unforeseen consequences of voluntarily styling one’s hair in such ways that pull and tug on individual hair follicles.

Medications, especially acne medications, often prescribed for teens, or medications used to treat bi-polar disorder often include hair loss as a common side effect. Chemotherapy and other cancer drugs are the most well-known drugs that cause hair loss.
